As I have noted earlier, the works that sit in the back of a bottom drawer should stay there, especially if the writer has since demonstrated substantial talent. Of course I'm assuming and hoping that Almost an Evening by the multi-Oscar winning Ethan Cohen is one such project that has mistakenly been brought to the light of day. I have seen much better work from college sophomores. Despite its excellent production under the direction of Neil Pepe and his cadre of top-notch actors, we have seen this trio of one-acts before penned by more capable hands. Only in the third piece does Mr. Cohen let the words ricochet off each other with skill. Again that is due in no small part to the hilarious performances of F. Murray Abraham and Mark Linn-Baker (and mention should go to Joey Slotkin's expert turn in the first piece). But almost an evening? - barely a matinee.
