The set is ugly, the costumes ill-fitting, the lighting unsubtle, the staging pitiable, and the acting, except for Amanda Jones in the title role of George Bernard Shaw's Candida currently presented by the Jean Cocteau Rep, is on the level of freshman science majors. Even Ms. Jones' performance is intensely measured as though she were giving elocution lessons which belies the true exuberance of Candida. The fact that this production has been extended for a number of weeks is a testament to either Mr. Shaw's indubitable playwriting skills or audiences that don't know any better. I'm assuming the former.
