A dark comedy about a clown from the unhappiest country in the world, Moldova, who pins her hopes on a US work visa by creating balloon animals. Chased by Homeland Security, a deportation letter deflates her enthusiasm, and a pair of spike heels might be all it takes to burst her American Dream. By Romanian playwright, poet, and journalist Saviana Stanescu, directed by Bosnian émigré Tea Alagic.

Aliens with Extraordinary Skills by Savianna Stanescu is an adorable play you might immediately forget at its end while walking up the aisle and out the door. It passes the time agreeably enough and one learns how difficult America can be for immigrants who fall for strippers and lightly loony lonely men, not to mention having to deal with Matrix-like officers from the bureau of deportation. But a lasting impression? No. The performers all exude a whimsical charm and have been whimsically directed by Tea Alagic on Kris Stone’s relatively ugly but whimsical set. As an exercise for a full length play, Ms. Stanescu satisfies all the requirements of say achieving an M.F.A. in playwriting and demonstrates a considerable amount of promise. I certainly wouldn’t be averse to seeing her next work and I commend the Women’s Theater Project for taking the time and expense for helping someone to develop their skills.
