[title of show]

[title of show] takes a thoroughly unique and comical look at the pleasures and perils of the artistic process as two struggling writers and two struggling actresses take on the seemingly impossible task of creating a new musical about creating a new musical. Now with Broadway as their destination, the quartet's saga continues anew as they face mounting pressures and deadlines, and are nearly thrown off-track by disagreements, day jobs and insecurities in this funny and unforgettable look at the birth of a musical as it finally comes to life on the Great White Way.

[title of show] is written by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell and is directed by Michael Berresse.  [title of show] on Broadway will star the musical's original cast -- Jeff Bowen, Hunter Bell, Susan Blackwell, Heidi Blickenstaff and musical director Larry Pressgrove.

This Broadway transfer of [title of show] reunites the original Off-Broadway creative team including Neil Patel (set design); Chase Tyler (costume design); Ken Billington and Jason Kantrowitz (lighting design) and ACME Sound Partners (sound design).

Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell decide to submit an entry into the 2004 Musical Theater Festival. The deadline is four weeks away. The problem is what to use as source material, as a jumping off point. As they become frustrated over half-baked and over-done themes, a week goes by. In a rather glib moment, Hunter (the gag-meister of the two) suggests they just proceed with writing a musical about writing a musical. After much protestation, Jeff (the worry-wort of the two) agrees to give it a try. What have they got to lose? A race is suddenly on to finish a show about writing said show before said show is to be submitted to said festival. Two female friends are enlisted to act in said show as said show is being written. If this all sounds like a rather dizzy Seinfeld episode, it’s because it rather is. It is also one of the most engaging evenings in recent theater.

This could have easily become too self-consciously slick for words. It doesn’t, due in no small part to the appealing, naturalistic performances of the cast (Heidi Blickenstaff and Susan Blackwell are the women) and that tried and true formula: the backstage, behind the scenes, underneath the greasepaint story that all avid theater-goers love (if you can quote from All About Eve then you know who you are). All the songs are clever without being too self-referential (although a working knowledge of Sondheim’s Into The Woods is extremely helpful). The entire production is given just the right amount of show-biz pizzazz by Broadway veteran Michael Berresse. And of course, the happy ending is that said show did make it into said festival and became the HIT of said festival only to move into said Off-Broadway house. Enough said.
